Charles Newton Pickworth

Charles Newton Pickworth (born March 4, 1861 in London , † May 15, 1955 in Cheadle , Cheshire near Manchester ) was an English engineer , editor and author .

Life and accomplishments

Charles Newton Pickworth was baptized on April 28, 1861 in St. Pancras , Middlesex , now part of London . His father was the engineer ("Practical engineer") John Pickworth and his mother Matilda Pickworth.

Charles Pickworth and his wife Louisa had two children, son Philip Charles Newton Pickworth, who also became an engineer ("M. Sc. (Techn)"), and daughter Dora Winifred Louisa.

From 1868 to 1874 Pickworth attended Holy Trinity Schools in Haverstock Hill, London. From 1875 to 1888 he worked in various workshops, most recently as a designer ("draughtsman"). From 1889 he worked as assistant to the editor for the journal Mechanical World . In 1891 he became editor himself. In 1899 he was proposed as a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers .

Pickworth became known as the author of technical manuals. Particularly noteworthy is “The slide Rule: a Practical Manual [for Engineers]”, which was published in a total of 24 editions. This work not only gives a comprehensive insight into the use of the slide rule according to the current state of technology, but also allows the development of the slide rule to be traced over four decades. He also wrote other books such as "The Indicator Handbook" in two volumes on the construction of displays and their scales.
