Charles R. Alcock
Charles Roger Alcock (born June 15, 1951 in Windsor , England ) is an American astronomer .
Life
Alcock received his PhD from the California Institute of Technology in 1977 . He was then a scientist at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton), 1981–1986 Associate Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , 1986–2000 at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory , where he headed the Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Physics. After a period as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania , he has been director of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics since 2004 . In 1983 he became a research fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellow ).
Alcock was the lead scientist of the MACHO project to search for faint but massive objects in the halo of the Milky Way with the help of the microlens effect . Such objects were sought as a possible part of dark matter . He leads a search for objects in the outer region of the solar system with the help of star coverages, the Taiwanese-American Occulation Survey.
