Charles Richard Johnson (born April 23, 1948 in Evanston , Illinois ) is an African-American novelist and short story writer , essayist and university professor.

Johnson began publishing cartoons and comics at the age of 17 , and studied philosophy and literary aesthetics . He lives in Seattle ( Washington ), taught at the university in the subject Creative Writing and has hosted its own signatory TV show, Charlie's Pad . He has published novels, short stories, essays and wrote several screenplays on African American topics. His most famous works include the historical novels "Die Überfahrt" and "Dreamer". While in “Die Überfahrt” a first-person narrator tells of his experiences on a slave ship , “Dreamer” describes the last days of Martin Luther King from the point of view of one of his colleagues. His literary works are influenced by European, African and Far Eastern philosophy, especially Zen Buddhism , African-American folklore and satirical elements. His literary influences include Ralph Ellison , John A. Williams and Herman Melville .
