Charles Stewart (politician, 1729)
Charles Stewart (* 1729 in Gortlea , County Donegal , Ireland , † June 24, 1800 in Flemington , New Jersey ) was an Irish- American politician . In 1784 and 1785 he was a delegate for New Jersey to the Continental Congress .
Career
In 1750 Charles Stewart came to the United States from his Irish homeland, where he worked in agriculture. In 1771 he became a lieutenant colonel in the then colonial militia of New Jersey. In the 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement. In 1776 he became a colonel in a battalion of the Minutemen . In 1784 and 1785 he represented New Jersey in the Continental Congress. He died in Flemington on June 24, 1800. Charles Stewart was the great-grandfather of Farrand Stewart Stranahan (1842-1904) who was, among other things, Lieutenant Governor of Vermont .
