Charlestown is the capital of the Caribbean island of Nevis, which is part of the Republic of St. Kitts and Nevis, and has a population of around 1700.
The place was built on the sheltered lee side of the island, between Fort Charles and Fort Black Rocks. Most of the original structures have been destroyed by earthquakes over the years , favored by the widespread practice of wooden constructions on stone floors.
Charlestown is the birth city of Alexander Hamilton . During the 17th century, many Sephardic Jews came to Nevis after being driven from Brazil .
