Charlie Lawrence
Charlie Lawrence (* around 1900 in Los Angeles ; † unknown) was an American jazz musician ( alto saxophone , clarinet ), arranger and composer .
Live and act
Lawrence played in Los Angeles in the mid-1920s in the cooperatively run Sunnyland Jazz Band , which was the most successful jazz orchestra in the city's African-American community at the time, but had no opportunity to record. Lawrence was the band's musical director and arranger and was therefore considered their band leader. In the late 1920s he worked for Paul Howard's Quality Serenaders, for which he also arranged (“Charlie's Idea” an arrangement of Nick LaRocca's “ Tiger Rag ”), and for Curtis Mosby . Lawrence also worked as an arranger for Louis Armstrong ("Harlem" or his composition "The Ramble"). He continued with Howard and Les Hite through the 1930s , then toured with Kid Ory and Noble Sissle . In the 1950s he played in the house band of the Bamboo Club in Hollywood; in the later years he worked as a music teacher and arranger before retiring in the 70s. In the field of jazz he was involved in ten recording sessions between 1928 and 1930.
