Paul Howard

Paul Leroy Howard (born September 20, 1895 in Steubenville , Ohio , † February 18, 1980 in Los Angeles ) was an American jazz musician ( saxophone , clarinet ) and band leader .

Howard grew up in Ohio and first learned the cornet (instrument) , he also played the oboe , bassoon , flute and piano , but then concentrated on the tenor saxophone. After moving to Los Angeles around 1911, he played with Wood Wilson's Syncopators in 1916, Satchel McVea's Howdy Band and Harry Southard's Black and Tan Band, as well as with King Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton on their tours of California. The first recordings were made in 1922-23 with the Quality Four , in 1925 he played with Sonny Clay . He then founded the Quality Serenaders , which in the course of its existence also included Lionel Hampton (drums and vocals), Charlie Lawrence , Reginald Foresythe , George Orendorff (trumpet), Lawrence Brown , Lloyd Reese and Ivie Anderson . 1927-29 the band had an engagement in Sebastian's Cotton Club ; During this time, recordings were made for Victor Records . The music of Paul Howard's Quality Serenaders was characterized by the arrangements of their lead saxophonist Charlie Lawrence, who wrote most of the band's repertoire. In 1930 the formation broke up when Les Hite took over several musicians. In the following years Howard played with Ed Garland, Freddie Washington , Lionel Hampton (1935), Eddie Barefield (1936/37), Charlie Echols and his own ensembles with whom he a. a. performed at Virginia's in Los Angeles (1939–53).
