Charlo is a municipality with the status of a Village ( English village ) in Restigouche County in the Canadian province of New Brunswick . Charlo is located in the north of the province, on the shores of the Chaleur Bay .

The parish was originally founded by Acadians in 1799 and received its current parish status in 1966. Due to the strong French influence in the history of the municipality, the majority of the inhabitants still speak French as their mother tongue (around 2/3 of the inhabitants).

Demographics

According to the 2016 census, Charlo has 1,310 inhabitants on an area of ​​31.30 km². The population density is 41.9 inhabitants / km². Compared to the 2011 and 2006 census, the population of the municipality has decreased by 1.1% and 4.5%, respectively. The negative population development in the municipality has continued for around 20 years. The median age in Charlo in 2011 was 51.4 years, well above the provincial average (43.7 years). With the 2016 census, Statistics Canada switched its analysis from the median age to the average age. In 2016, the average age in Charlo was 48.7 years, well above the provincial average of 43.6 years.

In terms of transport, Charlo is well developed for Canadian standards and a community of its size. New Brunswick Route 11 runs along the southern edge of the parish and New Brunswick Route 134 runs somewhat more centrally through the parish . There is also a VIA Rail Canada stop in Charlo .
