Charlotta Falkman

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charlotta Falkman (born March 18, 1795 in Södermanland , Sweden ; † May 24, 1882 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish-Swedish writer with a Swedish mother tongue who published one of the first Swedish-language novels in Finland and, due to her circumstances and descriptions, both an important source for the Everyday life of her time as well as one of the most important feminist authors of her home country during the 19th century.

Life

Falkman was of middle-class descent, had a careful upbringing and grew up in Helsinki. She initially worked as a private tutor and governess , but had to give up this work due to increasing hearing loss. She made a living doing sewing and started writing. Her four novels are among the first to appear in Finland and describe the life of the upper class , but also the social deprivation of the lower classes , whereby the author processed her own experiences. Along with Fredrika Wilhelmina Carstens , Maria Kraftman , Wendla Randelin and Fredrika Charlotta Runeberg , Charlotta Falkman is one of the most important Finnish feminist authors.
