location

The tunnel is located in the northern Harz not far from the federal highway 244 , which connects Wernigerode with Elbingerode (Harz). The Weißkopfchaussee runs below the tunnel, which joins Bundesstraße 244 at the former Bolmke Chausseehaus not far from the castle water house .

history

The Elbingerode office , in which the Charlottenstollen is located, belonged to the Count of Stolberg, who resided at Wernigerode Castle , until the 16th century . They lost the office of Elbingerode, which was very profitable due to the abundant mining, to the Dukes of Braunschweig, whereby it fell to the Electorate of Hanover in the 18th century and belonged to the Prussian Province of Hanover from 1867 .

A lot of mining was carried out on the Büchenberg as early as the High Middle Ages. It was on the border between the Elbingerode office and the county of Wernigerode . On their territory, the Augusten tunnel was built above Bolmke at the expense of Count zu Stolberg-Wernigerode, who served the water solution for the Count's Stolberg mines. However, some of the mines in the Elbingerode district on Büchenberg also benefited from the water solution. Therefore, the Counts of Stolberg asked for financial support for the maintenance of the Augustenstollen.

The Clausthal Mining Authority responsible for the Elbingerode office calculated that in the long term the maintenance costs to be paid to the Counts of Stolberg-Wernigerode for the Augusten tunnel are higher than creating their own gallery on the territory of the office. Therefore, the Clausthal Mining Authority approved financial resources for the construction of its own solution tunnel on the territory of the Hanoverian authority Elbingerode, which was designed with a length of 108 Lachtern . In 1803, the excavation of the tunnel into the Büchenberg began above the Weißkopfchaussee. This was announced by a keystone above the mouth hole, which was lost over the centuries and was reconstructed in 2005.
