He served primarily the solution of the water in the mountain area Elbingerode be built mines. Its mouth is now a mining monument and its underground course is used as a roost for bats. The tunnel is a station on the Elbingerode mining trail in the Harz Mountains .

location

The tunnel is located in the northern Harz not far from the federal highway 244 , which connects Wernigerode with Elbingerode (Harz). The Weißkopfchaussee runs directly along the mouth of the tunnel, which joins Bundesstraße 244 at the former Bolmke Chausseehaus not far from the Schlosswasserhäuschen . The tunnel leads under the road in a westerly direction. The reconstructed mouth of the Hartengrippenhagensberger tunnel is only about 100 meters above the Augusten tunnel .

history

The Augustenstollen was located on the southwestern edge of the County of Wernigerode, right on the border with the Elbingerode Office , which until the 16th century belonged to the Counts of Stolberg , who resided at Wernigerode Castle . They lost the office of Elbingerode, which was very profitable due to the abundant mining, to the Dukes of Braunschweig, whereby it fell to the Electorate of Hanover in the 18th century and belonged to the Prussian Province of Hanover from 1867 .

A lot of mining was carried out on the Büchenberg as early as the High Middle Ages . Only a few meters from the border of the Elbingerode office to the county of Wernigerode, the Augustensollen was created on the territory of the Counts of Stolberg-Wernigerode above the Bolmke forest area at the count's expense in 1783 and operated for many decades. It served as a water solution for the Count's Stolberg mines. However, some of the mines in the Elbingerode district on Büchenberg also benefited from the water solution. Therefore, the Counts of Stolberg asked for financial support for the maintenance of the Augustenstollen.

The Clausthal Mining Authority responsible for the Elbingerode office calculated that in the long term the maintenance costs to be paid to the Counts of Stolberg-Wernigerode for the Augusten tunnel are higher than creating their own gallery on the territory of the office. Therefore, the Clausthal Mining Authority approved financial resources for the construction of its own solution tunnel on the territory of the Hanoverian authority Elbingerode, which was designed with a length of 108 Lachtern . In 1803 the driveway of the Charlottenstollen into the Büchenberg started above the Weißkopfchaussee , whose mouth hole, which was reconstructed in 2005, is only a few hundred meters away from the Augustenstollen.

monument

The Augustenstollen is registered as a monument under registration number 094 55845 in the list of cultural monuments in Wernigerode .
