A chassé (also called alternating step ) describes a combination of the following three steps in dancing :

  1. Step aside
  2. Free leg closes to support leg
  3. Step aside

In short: "since – last – since"

These three steps can be carried out in any direction. They are part of many figures and variations.

The length of time of the individual steps depends on the respective dance and the respective figure or variation: In Cha-Cha-Cha , the chassé of the basic step in normal timing with 1/2, 1/2 and 1/1 of a beat on 4 and 1 danced. In the jive , on the other hand, the first step of the chassé is longer, the second shorter. Here 3/4, 1/4 and 1/1 of a beat are used. A chassé that is not danced to the side can be replaced by a cross step (lockstep).
