Chea Sim

Chea Sim ( Khmer ជា ស៊ី ម ; born November 15, 1932 in the province of Svay Rieng ; † June 8, 2015 in Phnom Penh ) was a functionary of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia until 1978 , most recently he was Senate President and President of the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP ).

Life

Chea Sim was probably revolutionary as early as the 1950s. Twenty years later he was secretary of a district committee of the Cambodian Communist Party under the Khmer Rouge. After they came to power in 1975, Chea Sim was the commander of a military unit in eastern Cambodia. Against the background of ideological conflicts within the organization he fled in 1978 together with Heng Samrin and Hun Sen after Vietnam . In the People's Republic of Kampuchea , newly founded in 1979 with the help of Hanoi , Chea first became Vice President and Minister of the Interior, after the elections in 1993 then Chairman of the National Assembly (and as such responsible for any succession to the throne of King Norodom Sihanouk ), and finally President of the Senate in 1999.

Chea Sim was most recently chairman of the ruling CPP in Cambodia, he was considered the “strong man” in the party. His political influence was based on the network of loyal CPP party members he built up early on. Although Chea Sim Hun Sen is said to have been a long-term sponsor since 1979, rumors circulated in Cambodia that there was a rivalry between Chea Sim and Prime Minister Hun Sen.
