The Cheapman Bay is a 6-km wide bay on the south coast of South Georgia , near the western end of the island. It is located immediately west of King Haakon Bay .
Participants in a US seal- catching expedition that lasted from 1877 to 1878 named a stretch of coast near the bay as Cheapman Beach . The British zoologist L. Harrison Matthews (1901-1986) used this name in his 1931 report on the Discovery Investigations . Alternatively, the name Langestrand ( Norwegian for Long Beach ) was common in South Georgia for this stretch of coast at the head of the bay or for the bay itself and was also used on a map of the British Admiralty from 1931. However, since explorations by the South Georgia Survey between 1951 and 1952 showed that at least four other beaches in South Georgia bore this name, this designation was discarded and the now established name for the bay was written instead.
