The King Haakon Bay , also known as King Haakon Sound , is a bay in the northwest of the island South Georgia at the south coast. It is about 13 km long and 4 km wide.
Probably around 1912 the bay was named by Norwegian whalers after King Haakon VII of Norway . Nearby is Queen Maud Bay , named after his wife.
The Cave Cove , which forms part of the bay, is best known for being Ernest Shackleton's landfall in May 1916 when he sought help for his stranded crew stuck on Elephant Island . Shackleton and his men also camped at Peggotty Bluff on the bay.
