Adolf Münzinger (born January 12, 1876 in Kirchentellinsfurt , † September 8, 1962 in Hohenheim ) was a German agricultural economist and long-time rector of the Hohenheim Agricultural University .

biography

Münzinger was born into a family of doctors in Kirchentellinsfurt in Württemberg and was already enthusiastic about agriculture at the age of 15. After five years of practical training, he began his agricultural studies in 1897 at what was then the Hohenheim Agricultural Academy , where he also joined the Academic Society of Gemütlichkeit . He completed his studies at the University of Jena with a doctorate with an agricultural science dissertation .

This was followed by many years of successful work as director of large agricultural operations in Eastern Europe, most recently with around 60,000 hectares of agricultural land in Hungary . In 1922 he was appointed to the chair for agricultural management in Hohenheim.

For the first time he combined large-scale theory and practical experience with the problems of small-scale agriculture in southern Germany. His initiatives in farm management influenced applied research, the training of practical farmers and the work of agricultural professional organizations for several decades.

During his 54 semesters of teaching, Professor Münzinger was repeatedly rector of the Hohenheim Agricultural University (1926 to 1927 and 1945 to 1947). Thanks to his commitment and his irreproachable reputation, Hohenheim was able to resume university operations under his leadership in January 1946, which had been discontinued during the war years. In his capacity as university rector, Münzinger was also a member of the provisional parliament for Württemberg-Baden in 1946 .

Even after his retirement in 1949 and until his death in Stuttgart in 1962, Münzinger remained a recognized authority and a driving force in scientific and practical agricultural research and professional organizations. He initiated the establishment of a Hohenheim alumni association, the "Hohenheim University Association", and was its executive board and honorary chairman for many years. After the reconstitution of the Corps Germania Hohenheim , which was based on his initiative, he became its long-standing chairman. In addition to numerous honors bestowed on Adolf Münzinger, including the Great Federal Cross of Merit and honorary doctorates , the State of Württemberg-Baden donated the Adolf Münzinger Prize in 1951, which has been awarded to the most successful farmers in the state for many years.
