McNish Island is an island on the off the south coast of South Georgia . It is the larger of the two islands on the eastern section of Cheapman Bay .
The South Georgia Survey mapped them as part of its survey campaign, which ran from 1951 to 1957. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1958 as McNeish Island after the ship's carpenter Harry McNish (1874-1930), participant in the endurance expedition (1914-1917) of the British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton . The spelling was adapted in 1998 to the one in the birth certificate of the namesake.
