Cheilotrema is a genus from the family of the croakers (Sciaenidae) with Cheilotrema saturnum the only type . However, some authors also include Sciaena fasciata in the genus.
features
Cheilotrema saturnum is a small fish with a maximum body length of 45 centimeters and a weight of up to 700 grams. The trunk is elongated and laterally flattened with a high back and a drooping forehead. On the top it is dark gray, purple or blackish with copper colored spots and an indistinct pale bar along the flank. The belly is silvery with dark spots. The scales are rough, except around the eye, along the sideline are 56 to 60. The fish's mouth lies below under a pointed snout. There are five pores on the chin but no barbels . The edge of the front cover is finely serrated. At the upper end of the gill cover there is an elongated, black spot. The gill trap has 14 to 20 thorns on the first arch. The fins are dark gray. The dorsal fin has 11 hard and 25 to 28 soft rays, the short pectoral fins each 17 to 18 soft rays. The anal fin has two hard rays of roughly the same length, of which the second is significantly thickened, followed by six or seven soft rays. The caudal fin ends straight.
Young animals have three or four dark stripes along the upper half of their body.
Occurrence
The species occurs off California and Baja California as well as in the Gulf of California in coastal waters from three to 100 meters deep. They colonize caves and crevices near sandy bottoms or open bays.
Way of life
The animals are mainly close to the ground and are true to their location. Mainly ground-dwelling crustaceans serve as food. Sexual maturity is reached with a length of about 27 centimeters. Spawning occurs from May to August. The maximum age is estimated at around 20 years.
