Cheiropachus Quadrum is a wasp from the family Pteromalidae .

features

The 3-5 mm large wasps are greenish or shimmering copper. The compound eyes are shimmering reddish. The abdomen tapers at the back. The transparent front wings each have two larger dark brown spots on the front edge, which indicate two centrally interrupted bars when the wings are folded back. In addition, the front wings have a thickened brown wing vein on the front edge . The first elongated antenna element is yellow-brown while the following antenna elements are darkly colored. The femora and tibia are yellow-brown to dark in color, the tarsi are yellow.

distribution

Cheiropachus quadrum is represented almost worldwide. The species occurs in the Palearctic , the Nearctic and the Neotropical . It is widespread in Europe. Their occurrence ranges from Scandinavia to North Africa. In Great Britain the wasp species is also represented.

Way of life

The wasps parasitize the larvae of various wood-dwelling beetles, in particular representatives of the bark beetle (Scotylinae) and the bark beetle (Bostrichidae). The wasps usually appear in early April. They are occasionally seen in buildings when they slip out of firewood. The development time from oviposition to finished insect takes about 20 days. Cheiropachus quadrum is one of the main parasites of Phloeotribus scarabaeoides , a bark beetle that attacks olive trees ( Olea europaea ) in southern Spain . Other known host species are the blue-green oak splendor beetle ( Agrilus sulcicollis ), the oak sapwood beetle ( Scolytus intricatus ), the small elm splint beetle ( Scolytus multistriatus ) and the large elm splint beetle ( Scolytus scolytus ). Due to its host species, the wasp wasp species is considered a beneficial insect , whose breeding and compatibility with insecticides is a research topic.
