The Chelan Mountains or Chelan Range are a mountain range in the US state of Washington . They are west of the Columbia River , north of the Entiat River and south of Lake Chelan . The chain is part of the North Cascades , a section of the Cascade Range .

geography

The Chelan Range is approximately 40 mi (64 km) long from northwest to southeast and approximately 8 mi (13 km) wide from southwest to northeast. They take up about 1,240 km².

The Chelan Mountains extend in the south to the Columbia River or Columbia Plateau between the Entiat River and the Chelan River . The north end of the chain merges with the north end of the Entiat Mountains . Most of the chain is within the Wenatchee National Forest . The northern section is part of the Glacier Peak Wilderness .

The name of the necklace comes from the Chelan people . A large number of the place names in the region, including many names from Bergen, were coined by Albert H. Sylvester .

The chain can be roughly divided into a (higher) northern and a (less high) southern section. All of the peaks of the northern section are more than 8,000 ft (2,438 m) high.
