The Entiat River is a tributary of the Columbia River in Chelan County , Washington state . It flows into the Columbia River near Entiat . The USGS has two alternative names for the Entiat River: En-ti-at-kwa River and Entiatqua River . The name of the river comes from the Columbia-Moses , a ( Salish language ). There / nt'yátk w / [nt'iátk w ] means "place of grassy water"; Another source claims that the river was called Enteatqua , which means "fast water" or "rushing water". The name spelled "Entiat" was chosen in 1958 by the Chelan County Public Utility District .

The Entiat River is entirely within Chelan County. Over 90% of its catchment area and that of its tributaries are publicly owned, a large part of the Wenatchee National Forest . A large number of field names in the Entiat River Basin were given by Albert H. Sylvester .

The headwaters of the Entiat River lie in the Glacier Peak Wilderness in the Wenatchee National Forest . Its main source is from the slopes on the east side of Mount Maude and the Seven Fingered Jack and the Entiat Glacier . From there the river flows eastward through Entiat Meadows before turning south. It flows south and southeast between the Entiat Mountains in the west and the Chelan Mountains in the east.

Downstream from the confluence of the main stream with the North Fork Entiat River , which rises at Fern Lake , the Entiat River tumbles over the Entiat Falls . It takes in the water of many small tributaries such as the Mad River .

For the final miles of its course, the Entiat River turns east to meet the Columbia River at river kilometer 794.2, just south of the small town of Entiat. At this point, the Columbia River forms the reservoir of the Rocky Reach Dam . The name of the reservoir is Lake Entiat .

The Entiat River is home to king salmon , steelhead and bull trout . The populations are comparatively small, which can be attributed to the lack of habitats for rearing young in the lower Entiat River.
