history

Lewis Detwiler was the first settler to reach the Entiat Valley in 1877 . The first public school was founded in 1891 and the first post office opened in 1895. In 1903 the chief of the Entiat, Shil-how-Saskt (Silico Saska) died. The Entiat power plant went online in 1908. In 1910, the Keystone Fruit Company began operations. The first newspaper, the Entiat Times , was published in 1913 by E. P. Murphy. The connection to the railway network took place in 1914. In the following year a second fire threatened the “first” city; only six companies survived this disaster. In 1916 the Entiat school opened at its current location. The Numeral Mountain tradition began in 1920 when ex-high school graduates painted their graduating class numbers on the mountainside across the Entiat River. In 1921 the “second” town of Entiat was secured, while the remaining buildings of the “first” burned down. Entiat was officially recognized as a local authority on April 25, 1944 . From 1960, the Rocky Reach Dam was built below Entiat, which meant that a large part of the city had to be relocated to higher ground to avoid the rising dam. Most of the original buildings were either demolished or rebuilt north of the original city. The “third” city “officially” started its business in 1961. The new Entiat Park was reopened for camping on May 22, 2015 after being closed for over a year.
