The Rocky Reach Dam is a dam on the Columbia River between Chelan County and Douglas County in Washington State , 11 km upstream from Wenatchee and 761 km upstream from the Columbia Estuary at Astoria . The dam has an L-shaped concrete gravity dam with a run-of-river power station and has dammed the Columbia to Lake Entiat since 1961 , which extends 69 km upstream to Wells Dam in the north. The dam is one of several barrages on Columbia and, like the Rock Island Dam following downstream, is operated by the Chelan County Public Utility District (Chelan County PUD).

history

Former impeller of a water turbine in front of the visitor center of the barrage.

First investigations into the realization of a barrage in the river section above Wenatchee were carried out by the United States Army Corps of Engineers in the 1930s . Chelan County PUD picked up the idea again in the 1950s, received preliminary construction approval from the Federal Power Commission in 1954, and began work in October 1956. A 50-year limited license to operate the Rocky Reach Dam was issued in 1957 and in early 2009, the Chelan County PUD obtained a final renewal until 2052 from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC, successor to the Federal Power Commission ) Template: future / in 5 years.

The dam with the run-of-river power plant and the first seven water turbines (with their respective generators ) were built between 1956 and 1961. Over 2.5 million cubic meters of soil and rock were moved. In the high phase of construction in 1959, over 2,100 workers were employed. Between 1969 and 1971 the run-of-river power plant was expanded to include four more water turbines (4 × 125.4 MW). An overhaul of the generators of the first seven turbines took place in the 1980s (today 7 × 105.0 MW) and between 1995 and 2006 the runners of all eleven turbines were replaced, another smaller 800 kW unit was installed in 2007.

Barrage

The barrage consists of a 868 m long and 40 m high L-shaped concrete gravity dam , with the flood relief forming an almost right angle with the run-of-river power station. The power plant with a length of 332 m lies parallel to the river and forms a small basin with the west bank. The 226 m long flood relief is perpendicular to the river and extends to the east bank. It is designed as a pressure segment weir and has 12 doors, each 15 m × 18 m in size. Further wall sections and fish ladders complete the structure.

The height difference between upstream and downstream is around 28 m during normal operation, the flow rate is 500–3000 m³ / s. In the event of a flood , when the flood relief is fully open, more than 35,000 m³ / s can flow away.

Overall, the Rocky Reach Dam has a nominal power plant output of 1,237.4 MW. Under favorable water conditions, this can be increased to up to 1,278 MW, but the operation of the plants above their specification only rarely occurs (approx. 2% per year). Around 5,900 GWh of energy are produced annually at a cost of around 1.2  dollar cents per kilowatt hour. The largest buyers are Puget Sound Energy (25%) and Alcoa (26%).

Reservoir

Lake Entiat extends 69 km upstream Columbia to Wells Dam in the north and has an average width of 480 m, with a maximum depth of about 40 m. The reservoir forms a large part of the boundary between Chelan County and Douglas County and has an area of 33.3 km² in normal operating condition ( reservoir target ). It is also fed by two tributaries , the Entiat River , which flows into the Columbia below the city of Entiat , and the Chelan River , which is dammed up by Lake Chelan Dam near the city of Chelan and is almost completely crossed by a 3.5 km Water tunnel being piped to a run-of-river power station on the banks of the Columbia.

With the construction of the Rocky Reach Dam in the 1950s, the approximately 400 residents of the city of Entiat had to be relocated, as the old urban area on the west bank of the Columbia was flooded with the opening of the barrage.
