The John Day Dam (English: John Day Dam ) in the northwest of the USA dams the Columbia River to Lake Umatilla . The dam was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers from 1958 to 1971 . It is one of several reservoirs in the Columbia Basin .
The reservoir , which was dammed from 1968, is 123 km long and extends to the McNary Dam. It lies on the border between the two states of Oregon and Washington . The narrow, elongated reservoir is about 1 to 2 km wide and, in addition to generating water power, is also used for irrigation, shipping, fishing and recreational sports such as windsurfing. The John Day River flows into the Columbia just above the dam .
The 2,327 m long and up to 64 m high gravity dam was built 348 km from the mouth of the Columbia in the Pacific and 45 km east of the city of The Dalles , Oregon. On the Washington side, Goldendale , to the north, is the nearest town at a distance of 32 km. In Oregon, the dam belongs to Sherman County , in Washington to Klickitat County .
Part of the dam is a hydropower plant that generates a nominal output of 2,160 MW. When it was completed, the power house is said to have been the second largest in the world. There is also a ship lock and fish ladders on either side of the dam.
