The Wells Dam is a gravity dam with hydroelectric power station on the Columbia River , below the confluence of the Okanogan River and the Methow River in Chelan County and Douglas County in the US state of Washington . The dam, with its associated facilities and machinery, forms the Wells Hydroelectric Project. It is operated by its owner, the Douglas County Public Utility District (PUD).
It has been producing electrical energy since August 22, 1967. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's operator license must next be renewed in 2052. In addition to two PUDs, the project supplies power to Puget Sound Energy , Portland General Electric , PacifiCorp , Avista Corporation and the Colville Indian Tribe .
The reservoir is called Lake Pateros . Just below the dam there is the Carpenter Island slipway and a fish hatchery. Lake Pateros is not deep, but it has a high throughput of water. Therefore Kaplan turbines (10 in total) are used for low hydraulic potential .
