Chelone (mythology)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chelone ( Greek  Χελώνη , "turtle") is a virgin in Greek mythology who was transformed into a turtle by Hermes .

On the occasion of the wedding of Zeus and Hera, all gods, humans and animals were invited by Hermes , the messenger of the gods . Chelone was the only one to stay at home out of contempt before the wedding. When Hermes noticed her absence, he went down to earth, threw Chelone and her house into a river, and turned her into a turtle that always has to carry her house on her back.

The shield flowers , a genus of the plantain family , and an ancient siege device were named after Chelone .
