Chen Jian

Chen Jian ( Chinese  陈健 ; * February 1942 in Wuxian, Suzhou , Jiangsu ) is a former diplomat of the People's Republic of China , who was Ambassador to Japan between 1998 and 2001 and then Vice Secretary-General of the United Nations from 2001 to 2007 .

Life

Chen Jian joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in September 1967 and initially worked in the Department of International Organizations and Conferences there and then from September 1968 to October 1971 at the cadre school of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, before joining the Department of International Organizations again between October 1971 and September 1972 and conferences was. After he was attaché to the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City from September 1972 to October 1977 , he was again a member of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences in the State Department between October 1977 and July 1980. He then acted from July 1980 to February 1984 successively as third, second and finally first secretary at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City. He then acted as assistant to the Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) between February 1984 and September 1985 and then from September 1985 to September 1992 successively as Head of Unit, Advisor and finally as Deputy Director General of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In September 1992, Chen became Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in the rank of Ambassador and held this position until July 1994, when he returned to serve as Director General of the Public Relations Department and Spokesman for the State Department between July 1994 and February 1996. He then served as Assistant Foreign Minister from February 1996 to February 1998 and was also a member of the CCP Party Committee at the State Department. In February 1998 he released Xu Dunxin Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador in Japan , and practiced this post with the rank of vice minister until April 2001., after Wu Dawei became his successor.

Chen Jian succeeded Jin Yongjian as Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations in April 2001 and held this post until 2007.
