Chen Jiru ( Chinese  陳繼儒  /  陈继儒 , Pinyin Chén Jìru ; 1558 - 1639 ), also known as Chen Meigong, was a Chinese painter , calligrapher , writer, and poet during the Ming Dynasty . He was born in Huating 华亭, now in the Songjiang District ( Shanghai ), in 1558 and died in 1639. He was also an expert on ceramics related to tea. Chen Jiru was a landscape artist who also painted still lifes , plum blossoms, and bamboo. In his calligraphy he followed the style of Su Shi (1037-1101) and Mi Fu (1051-1107) from the time of the Song dynasty . Chen Jiru, along with Dong Qichang and Mo Shilong, was one of the outstanding figures of the Huating School (华亭 派 and Songjiang School 松江 画派) of painting in the Ming Dynasty. The work Shitong史 通 by Liu Zhiji (661–721) from the time of the Tang Dynasty was published in a revised and commented edition ( Shitong dingzhu史 通 订 注). Many of his writings appear in the Baoyantang miji宝 颜 堂 秘笈 collection.
