Castle Wördl

Wördl Castle (Slov. Otočec , older also Otočič , Wördl ) on the Gurk is the name of a moated castle on a small river island in the middle of the Krainer Gurk (Krka) in the village of Otočec ( Novo mesto municipality , Slovenia ).

history

Wördl Castle (Grad Otočec) to Valvasor

The castle is first documented in the 13th century, the walls are said to be dated to 1252. The moated castle in Slovenia changed from the originally German Wörgl to the Slovenian Otočec . Once owned by Ivan Lenković , leader of the Uskoks and the Croatian-Slavonic March , the castle was also owned by the Knights of Otočec. Ivan Tavčar mentioned the castle in two of his novels, Otok and Struga and Janez Sonce .Wördl Castle once belonged to those of Weichselberg (noble family) from the von Pux branch. Before the Second World War , the castle was in the hands of the house of Marghieri de Commadona . When the war started, the Italians occupied the building and used it as a base. In 1942 partisans burned the building down, leaving only a ruin. In 1952 the restoration began and in 1959 the first restaurant opened in the castle. Over the course of time, several modifications were carried out, ultimately the building received its original appearance as a moated castle in the style of Gothic and Renaissance .

Todays use

Grad Otočec is now a small luxury hotel with a restaurant. There is also a boathouse , a golf course , a castle park and an adventure park nearby.
