Chen Xiaoyong (born May 13, 1955 in Beijing ) is a Chinese composer.

Life

Chen Xiaoyong studied violin in Beijing and from 1980 to 1985 composition at the Central Conservatory. Immediately thereafter, he completed postgraduate studies with György Ligeti at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater until 1989 . Chen Xiaoyong received the Christoph and Stephan Kaske Prize in Munich in 1993 and the Bach Prize scholarship of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg in 1995 . Guest professorships have taken him to Taiwan , Hong Kong and the PR China since 1997 . Chen has been a lecturer at the Asia-Africa Institute at the University of Hamburg since 1987 and lives as a freelance composer in Hamburg. In 2010 he received a visiting professorship at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater, where he has been professor of composition since October 2013.

Compositional creation

In his compositional style, Chen Xiaoyong is very close to East Asian philosophy, in which the intrinsic value of things and sound is given much greater attention than in Western thought. The decisive factor is not the scope of the musical material used, but rather its sensitive development with new and unexpected means in order to enable the listener to experience the sound in depth. Chen's music is also very closely linked to the characteristics of the Chinese language and music, which is reflected in its subtle melodies: the smallest changes, temporal expansions, interval spreads and differentiated differences in dynamics characterize his compositions. However, Chen does not write purely Chinese or purely European music. Although it also refers to the Chinese music tradition - for example through the use of the Chinese zither Zheng - it does not give the impression of folkloric ingredients.

Chen made his European debut as a composer in 1987 at the Donaueschinger Musiktage with the world premiere of the 1st string quartet by the Auryn Quartet . In 1992, Chen received the composition prize of the Forum for Young Composers of the WDR for his composition "Yün" for soprano and 11 instrumentalists, which was premiered under Péter Eötvös with the Ensemble Modern in Cologne. In 1999, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen produced the portrait CD Invisible Landscapes in cooperation with Radio Bremen . Also in 1999 he wrote the orchestral work Interlaced Landscapes on behalf of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation , which had seven performances with the Orquestra Gulbenkian under Muhai Tang on a tour through China and Portugal. In 2000 the composition Fusion for Ensemble was commissioned by cellist Yo-Yo Ma for his Silk Road Project. In June 2002 the composition XI-Fusion III for ensemble was premiered on commission from the Asia-Africa Institute of the University of Hamburg.

He worked with numerous orchestras and ensembles in Europe and Asia. His works have now been performed in all continents a. a. at numerous festivals, such as the Asian Music Festival and Pacific Music Festival in Japan, Dresden Days of Contemporary Music , Asian Contemporary Music Festival Korea, Musicarama in Hong Kong, Holland Festival , Wiener Graben-Fest-Tage, Festival "Présences" by Radio France ( Paris), Days of New Music Hanover, Festival Ars Musica (Belgium), World Music Days in Manchester (1998) and Hong Kong (2002, 2007), Das neue Werk Hamburg, Festival der Zeit Münster, Brahms Festival Lübeck, International Summer Courses for New Music Darmstadt , Tromp Muziek Biennale in Holland, Days of New Music Würzburg, Biennale of New Music Hanover, Tanglewood Festival (USA), International Gaudeamus Music Week, Festival MaerzMusik / Berliner Festspiele , Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, International Shanghai Spring Music Festival, Warsaw Autumn , Summer Music Days Hitzacker , Hamburg SoundWorks Days Festival.
