Chiens de Paille are a French hip hop duo . The group was founded in 1992 by rapper Sako and producer Hal . Both band members are based in Cannes , but have Italian roots. Their first publication was the song Maudits soient les yeux fermés (in German, for example: With closed eyes is bad. ), Which they were able to place on the soundtrack of the action comedy Taxi , produced by Luc Besson in 1998 . Executive producer of the album was musician and entrepreneur Akhenaton , who subsequently signed the group on his label 361 Records . In 2001 Chiens de Paille released her debut album Mille et une fantômes (in German: 1001 ghost ) there. The album comprises 14 tracks, some of which were created in collaboration with other artists from her record company.

style

The group cannot be clearly identified within the French hip-hop scene. Stylistically, the classification in the genre of conscious rap is most appropriate. MC Sako tells his (often dreary) stories with a sonorous voice and calm sound, the pieces composed by producer Hal often derive their framework from soul and funk . More recent publications show a clear opening towards current trends in the genre , such as synthesizers and electronic drum sounds. In terms of text, the group uses a simple and precise, but thoroughly poetic language, which makes them loners within the scene.

various

  • The name of the group refers to the classic film Who sows violence by American director Sam Peckinpah : Chiens de Paille is both the literal translation and the French title of the film, which is originally entitled Straw Dogs .
  • Producer Sébastien Alfonsi borrowed his stage name Hal from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey by American director Stanley Kubrick .
