Chignahuapan (Spanish pronunciation: [ tʃiɣnaˈwapan ] ) is a city in the northern part of the Mexican state of Puebla with almost 20,000 inhabitants (2010). It is the capital of the municipality of the same name, Municipio Chignahuapan, with just under 58,000 inhabitants. Because of its colonial city center, it is one of the Mexican villages awarded as Pueblo mágico .
The name Chignahuapan is made up of the Nahuatl words chicnahui ("nine"), atl ("water") and the suffix pan ("on", "in"), meaning "above the nine waters" or "where water" is in abundance ".
Location and climate
The city of Chignahuapan is located in the Mexican highlands, at the entrance to the Sierra Madre Oriental , at an altitude of about 2300 m . The city of Puebla is approx. 110 km (driving distance) to the south, Mexico City approx. 190 km to the south-west. The climate is moderately warm (subtropical mountain climate according to Köppen-Geiger ). The annual precipitation of about 670 mm falls mainly during the summer half-year.
economy
While the municipality of Chignahuapan is strongly characterized by agriculture and forestry, tourism plays a larger role in the city. A specialty is the production of Christmas tree balls made of blown glass (Esferas de Navidad). In more than 200 workshops, over 70 million pieces are produced annually and sold throughout Mexico, but also worldwide - in Europe, especially to the Vatican.
Attractions
- Parroquia de Santiago Apóstol . Franciscan church from the 16th century with a facade in the style of the Mexican Baroque (also Tetiqui style) influenced by indigenous influences.
- Plaza de armas with Palacio Municipal (town hall) and a pavilion ("kiosco"); stylistically based on the historical Mudéjar style , it is said to be the only one in Mexico built entirely from wood and equipped with a fountain. Monument to the actor and comedian Gaspar Henaine “Capulina” , who came from Chignahuapan.
- Basílica de La Inmaculada Concepción . Basilica of the Immaculate Conception from the 20th century with a monumental sculpture of Mary made of cedar wood by the sculptor José Luis Silvia from Puebla.
- Lagoon of Chignahuapan , also Lagoon of Almoloya, which is formed from the eponymous nine "water eyes " (ojos de agua) and is used for various leisure activities and cultural events (in particular the Festival de la Luz y la Vida on the Día de Muertos ).
- In the vicinity there are thermal baths and the Salto de Quetzalapan waterfall .
