Childwickbury Manor

Childwickbury Manor is a country house in Hertfordshire , England , between St. Albans and Harpenden . The previous owner was Henry Hayman Toulmin, a wealthy shipowner and Sheriff of Hertfordshire and Mayor of St. Albans. He bought the property from Joshua Lomax in 1854 and sold it to Sir John Blundell Maple about 20 years later.

Racehorse owner Jack Joel bought the country house together with a horse breeding company around 1929. It remained in the possession of the Joel family until 1978 when it was sold again separately from the horse breeding business. The horse breeding went to Marquesa de Moratella .

The director Stanley Kubrick bought the villa in 1978. He used the property as his private home and planning office for his film productions. He had existing horse stables converted to store backdrops and costumes and as a cutting room. He became more independent from the studios in preparation for production and in post-production. The remote location of the property and Kubrick's way of working outside of the US and away from the big studios contributed a lot to his myth as a brilliant loner.

Stanley Kubrick lived there with his wife until his death in 1999, he is buried in the garden of the property. His wife Christiane Kubrick and brother-in-law Jan Harlan manage the director's estate from Childwicksbury Manor.

The main building has been a listed building grade II since 1978 .
