Jan Harlan (born May 5, 1937 in Karlsruhe ) is a German executive producer , director and lecturer at film schools , who is best known for his work as an executive producer for his brother-in-law Stanley Kubrick .

Life

Jan Harlan is the son of the opera singers Fritz Moritz Harlan (1901–1970) and Ingeborg Harlan (nee de Freitas), who were engaged at the Karlsruhe State Theater in the 1930s. He went to school in Freiburg, where his father was engaged from 1948. In 1962 he went to the USA. He has lived in England since 1970.

Harlan initially worked on Kubrick's unrealized Napoleon project before joining Uhrwerk Orange as a production assistant . Since then, he has been executive producer on all of Stanley Kubrick's films. He also had this role in Kubrick's last project AI - Artificial Intelligence , which was realized by Steven Spielberg after his death . In 2001 Harlan made his debut as a director with the documentary Stanley Kubrick - A Life for the Film . For this film he was nominated at the DVD Exclusive Awards in the category Best Original Retrospective.

In addition to his work as Kubrick's estate administrator , together with his sister Christiane Kubrick , Harlan made the 85-minute documentary Oh, du Glücklicher Malcolm! on the actor Malcolm McDowell .

Private

Harlan is the brother of Christiane Kubrick, the widow of Stanley Kubrick, who was thus his brother-in-law. He is also the nephew of the German director Veit Harlan . He has three sons. His son Dominic works as a musician and worked with Eyes Wide Shut . His son Manuel has worked as a photographer, camera assistant and cameraman (for example for Stanley Kubrick - A Life for Film ) in film production.
