The China Garden Zurich is a Chinese garden by the Zurichhorn in the Seefeld district in Zurich . It belongs to the group of temple gardens .

history

The garden is a gift from Zurich's Chinese partner city Kunming , with which it wanted to express its thanks for Zurich's support in expanding Kunming's drinking water supply and urban drainage. The green space was built from May to October 1993 under the direction of the City of Zurich's Horticultural Office by gardening specialists and craftsmen from Kunming and Zurich. The inauguration took place by the then mayor of Kunming and the then mayor of Zurich Josef Estermann in the spring of 1994.

The project was financed by the Zurich Water Supply, which celebrated its 125th anniversary in 1993. Grün Stadt Zürich has been responsible for the maintenance and operation of the garden since 2010 .

structure

The garden lies on a rectangular area surrounded by a low wall. The central element is a pond with a small island in the middle. There are several buildings next to it:

  • On the south bank of the pond, the water palace with lake terrace. Inside there is some Chinese style furniture and two monumental paintings.
  • Open gallery corridors lead in both directions. The entablature is decorated with over 500 different landscapes and still lifes . The carved half-arches over the crossbeams are a specialty of Yunnan Province with the capital Kunming. The northern gallery ends at a square pavilion.
  • On the west bank of the pond, opposite the main entrance, an artificial mountain massif rises up, which fulfills the function of a ghost wall.
  • There is a small round pavilion on the island. It is accessed from the west by a zigzag bridge and from the east by a round arch bridge. It is said to remind of the Taoist island of the immortals.
  • In the northeast of the garden there is a hexagonal pavilion with a Phoenix motif.

In addition, a multitude of plants, bushes, rocks, stones, waterfalls, characters and the like are distributed in the park. Their arrangement is not accidental, but reflects the various references, especially to the Chinese symbolic language . Particular attention is paid to the main themes of Chinese culture, the so-called three friends in winter : bamboo , pine and winter cherry.

The location of the China Garden was chosen according to the Chinese geomancy , the recognition of good places in space and landscape, therefore placed between the Zürichberg and Zürichsee .
