Josef Estermann (politician)

Josef Estermann (born October 22, 1947 in Lucerne ) is a Swiss politician ( SP ) and former city ​​president of Zurich .

Life

Estermann grew up in Kriens in central Switzerland . He studied law at the University of Zurich and graduated in 1973 with a licentiate . He then worked as a building lawyer in the appeals department of the building department of the Canton of Lucerne and later as a research assistant at the Zurich City Planning Office. From 1982 to 1990 he was a member of the building course commission in Zurich as an expert on building and planning issues.

From 1984 to 1990 Estermann belonged to the council of the city of Zurich. From 1990 to 2002 Estermann was Mayor of Zurich. In 2003 he ran unsuccessfully for the Council of States .

From 1990 he was a member of the board of directors of the Zurich Opera House and its president from 2003 until the end of the 2012/13 season, when he was replaced by Markus Notter.

In 2001 Estermann received the Fischhof Prize , which is awarded by the Foundation against Racism and Anti-Semitism (GRA) and the Society for Minorities in Switzerland (GMS).

Josef Estermann has been married to Magi Estermann-Juchler since 1979.
