Mayor 1803–1869

The title of mayor has been used for the head of the cantonal government since 1803. The office was held collegially by two members of the government council, who took turns as mayors every year.

In 1850, the government in the canton of Zurich switched from collegial to departmental system and the dignity of mayor was abolished in favor of an annually changing presidium of the government council.

City presidents from 1803

With the constitutional amendment of 1869, the President of the Government Council became the head of the Zurich government. The city of Zurich is a municipality in the canton of Zurich since 1803 by a mayor or a city president passed.
