Salomon Hirzel (born August 8, 1580 in Zurich ; † June 24, 1652 ibid) was a Swiss businessman , politician and diplomat .

Salomon Hirzel was the son of the businessman and politician Salomon Hirzel (* 1544; † 1601). At first he continued his father's business as a cloth merchant and wholesaler. His political career began in 1609 as a representative of the Saffran Guild in the Grand Council. In the following years he held several offices - including guild master , governor , builder and imperial bailiff - until he was appointed mayor of Zurich in 1637 .

During his political career, Hirzel played a key role in the reorganization of the Zurich administration, for example as a member of the Reformation Commission and the Building Commission. During his tenure as mayor (1637–1652) he pushed through the construction of the city ​​fortifications and commissioned the cartographer Hans Conrad Gyger to produce maps of the Zurich area .

With his doctrine of strict neutrality , Salomon Hirzel made a significant contribution to keeping the Republic of Zurich out of the Thirty Years' War .
