Corine Mauch (born May 28, 1960 in Iowa City , United States ; resident in Teufenthal and Zurich ) is a Swiss politician ( SP ). She has been the mayor of Zurich since May 2009 .

Corine Mauch was born in the United States as a Swiss-US-American citizen and grew up partly there and partly in Oberlunkhofen in the canton of Aargau . At the end of 2012, she gave up her US citizenship because she feels much more connected to Switzerland. She is the daughter of Ursula Mauch , Aargau SP National Councilor (1979–1995) and the engineer Samuel Mauch, who co-founded the left-wing group 67 in Baden in 1967 . Her maternal uncle is the entrepreneur Hans Widmer .

Education and professional activities

Corine Mauch studied at the ETH Zurich and graduated as an agricultural economist. She studied Sinology at the University of Zurich and has a master's degree in Political and Administrative Sciences from the University of Lausanne / IDHEAP .

For four years Mauch was waste and environmental officer for the city of Uster and worked, among other things, as head of the SAGUF (Swiss Academic Society for Environmental Research and Ecology) office and as a project manager at Interface Political Studies Lucerne. Before taking office as Mayor of the City, Corine Mauch worked as a project manager for evaluations and impact controls at the parliamentary services of the Federal Assembly .

Mauch has been a member of the SP since 1990. From 1999 she was a member of the Zurich City Council , among other things as President of the Auditing Commission, from October 2008 she was parliamentary group president .

Corine Mauch sets her political priorities in energy, environmental and planning policy. The central concern of her work as a councilor was the inclusion of the goal of the 2000-watt society in the municipal code of the city of Zurich, which in particular includes the increased use of renewable energy sources and the more efficient use of energy, but also stipulates the city's withdrawal from nuclear energy. As a councilor, she also dealt with cultural policy, one of the mayor's core tasks. She also exerts political influence on same-sex issues, such as demands during the election campaign for support for gay and lesbian cultural projects or that homosexuality should be included in all school lessons as an equal way of life.

Election to the city council

On December 2, 2008, she was nominated by the Social Democratic Party of the City of Zurich as a candidate for the successor to the resigning Mayor Elmar Ledergerber . In the first ballot on February 8, 2009, her opponent Kathrin Martelli from the FDP was ahead of Mauch with around 1,300 votes, without achieving an absolute majority. In the second ballot on March 29, 2009, 41,745 Zurich elected Corine Mauch as the first female mayor of Zurich . Mauch was re-elected on March 7, 2010, February 9, 2014 and March 4, 2018.

Private

Corine Mauch lives with her long-term partner, the musician Juliana Müller, in Zurich's Unterstrass district . In April 2014 they registered their partnership .
