Hans Conrad Escher vom Luchs (born October 8, 1743 in Zurich ; † December 12, 1814 there ) was a conservative politician in the canton of Zurich .

biography

Hans Conrad Escher was born in 1743 as the son of Hans Heinrich Escher from the Escher vom Luchs family branch. In 1765 he was promoted to secretary of the Reformation Chamber and two years later became a judge at the Zurich City Court. As head of the Constaffel Society , he was a member of the Grand Council and Seckelmeister of the city of Zurich from 1774. In 1778 he took up the post of bailiff of Wädenswil , and in 1790 he became bailiff of the community of Baden . In 1796 he returned to Zurich as Obervogt von Küsnacht .

On April 26, 1798, Escher was elected the first president of the «Munizipalität» Zurich, after the city and republic of Zurich went under on March 13, 1798 and became part of the Helvetic Republic . He also presided over the first municipal council of Zurich, which was elected on June 19, 1803, and was the first to hold the title of "City President" of Zurich.

During the mediation period , Escher was a member of the government of the Canton of Zurich from 1804 to 1814 and was elected "Mayor" (head of the cantonal government) of Zurich on June 25, 1814. As such, he presided over the Swiss Federal Diet until his death .
