Robert Billeter

Jakob Robert Billeter (born September 24, 1857 in Gorizia , then Austrian Empire , now Italy , † February 23, 1917 in Zurich ; resident in Zurich and Männedorf ) was a Swiss politician ( FDP ). He was mayor of Zurich from 1909 to 1917 .

biography

Billeter grew up in northern Italy , where his father Jakob worked as a cotton industrialist. 1865 the family returned to Switzerland, and Robert Billeter completed a banking apprenticeship . From 1886 he worked on the editorial staff of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung . In 1892 he was elected a member of the Great City Council (Parliament). From 1896 he was a member of the Small City Council (government), initially as head of taxation and from 1901 as chief financial officer. From 1899 he was also a member of the management of the Schweizerische Kreditanstalt . In 1909 he was elected mayor of Zurich. In addition, he was a member of the Zurich Cantonal Council from 1899 , and of the National Council after the parliamentary elections in 1911 . He died in office in 1917. In 1919 a street in Zurich was named after him.
