The Chirolophinae are a subfamily of the fish family of the prickly backs (Stichaeidae) in the partial order of the eel mother relatives (Zoarcales). All twelve species in the group are bottom-dwelling marine fish found in the cool waters of the northern Pacific.

features

The body of the Chirolophinae is elongated and covered with small scales while the head is scaly. The head, fore part of the body and the first rays of the dorsal fin may have flaps of skin or other skin growths. The anal fin has a weakly developed fin spine at its beginning. The relatively large pectoral fins are supported by 13 to 15 fin rays, the ventral fins by a spine and 2 to 4 fin rays. The number of eddies is 57 to 71. The number of Branchiostegal rays is six. The lateral line system of the trunk consists of a dorsal and a mediolateral row of neuromastes . The Chirolophinae are 12 to 55 cm long.
