Chiropterotriton mosaueri is a member of the lungless salamander family thatlives in caves. It is endemic to Mexico and was not rediscovered until 2010 after its first description in 1941. Overall, very little is known about the animals.

features

Chiropterotriton mosaueri is a medium-sized representative of the lungless salamander. It becomes about 10 cm long, with the tail, which is round in cross section, at about 6 cm and is slightly longer than the rest of the body. Its snout is relatively large and short with a protruding upper lip. The limbs are very long and end in flat fingers and toes, each with webbed feature. There are 12 or 13 furrows on either side of the body that extend laterally across the abdomen. The animals are colored dark brown and have no recognizable pattern on top. Some darker spots can be seen on the lighter colored underside.

distribution and habitat

The species has so far only been found in a cave near Zimapán in the Mexican state of Hidalgo at an altitude of 2160 m. The exact location of the cave was not described; it is on the edge of the Los Mármoles National Park .

Chiropterotriton mosaueri lives in damp caves and crevices in pine-oak forests. Due to deforestation around the caves and the associated drying out, the animals' habitat is dwindling.
