Chittagong Port Authority

The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA, Bengali চট্টগ্রাম বন্দর কর্তৃপক্ষ Caṭṭagrām Bandar Kartṛpakṣa ), in German Port Authority Chittagong , is a government agency in Bangladesh that is responsible for the administration of the country's most important port, the port of Chittagong , in the city of Chittagong on Karnaphuli , nine nautical miles from the shores of the Bay of Bengal in the Indian Ocean . The CPA is part of the Ministry of Shipping.

history

The port of Chittagong has been around since at least the 4th century BC. In operation and in modern times was administered by port commissioners and the port railway under the Port Commissioner's Act of 1887 in British India . After the partition of India in 1947 and a subsequent increase in port traffic, the modern Chittagong Port Authority began its existence as the Chittagong Port Trust in 1960. Due to the continued expansion and a lack of effective governance, the Port Trust received a semi-autonomous status within the government after the Bangladesh war and was renamed the Chittagong Port Authority in 1976.

tasks

In addition to managing the port and implementing port development plans, the CPA provides educational, medical, cultural and sports services for its employees and the local population. The agency operates a 150-bed hospital, 2 high schools, 5 elementary schools, a mass education center, a few mosques and some temples, in which employees of the agency and ordinary people of the region receive corresponding services free of charge.
