Cho Haeil

Cho Haeil (born April 18, 1941 in the Republic of China - † June 19, 2020 ) was a South Korean writer .

Life

Cho Haeil was born as Cho Hae-ryong in China in 1941. In 1945 his family returned to Seoul. He studied Korean Language and Literature at Kyung Hee University , where he later also worked as a professor of Korean literature (as of 2014).

He made his debut in 1970 with the short story Daily Dying (매일 죽는 사람), which was selected in a literary competition of the JoongAng Ilbo .

The characters in Cho Haeil's stories come from all walks of life and the author tried to parody social injustice and irrationality by depicting ordinary aspects of life . In Im Kkŏkchŏng (임꺽정), for example, he used elements of the historical novel to depict contemporary society. Cho Haeil's popular works Winterfrau (겨울 여자) and Uyoil (우 요일 雨 曜 日), which were initially published as serial novels in newspapers, deal with the human psyche.

The story America , which was also translated into English, is about the experiences of a man who has just finished his military service and helps out as a bouncer in his uncle's brothel, in the red light district near a US military base. He is confronted with the chaos of racism, murder, etc. there and his own life is also in a chaotic state.
