The Van Sung shrew ( Chodsigoa caovansunga ) is a species of shrew from the genus Chodsigoa . It was first described in 2003 from northern Vietnam and so far is only known from this area.

features

With a head-to-trunk length of 5.8 to 6.4 centimeters, the Van Sung shrew is one of the small species of shrew. The tail reaches a length of 51 to 88 millimeters and is thus about as long as the body, the rear foot is 14 to 16 millimeters long. The back and belly color is slate gray with a dark brown tinge, whereby the belly is a little lighter. The individual hairs are slate gray with a dark brown tip. The tail is brown on top and creamy white underneath; he appears naked, but is covered with short, brown hair. The tops of the feet appear creamy white through the skin and are given a light brownish color by the brown hair. Compared to the very similar Chodsigoa parca , the animals are smaller and differ in the slightly different color of the feet and the lack of a tuft of hair at the end of the tail.

Tooth formula of the Chodsigoa species

The skull has a total length of 17.3 to 18.4 millimeters. Like all species of the genus has the type in the maxilla per half an incisor (incisor) and then three unicuspid teeth, a Vorbackenzahn (premolar) and three molars (molar). In the lower jaw, however, it has a single canine behind the incisor. In total, the animals have a set of 28 teeth. The tooth roots are colored red as in most red-toothed shrews.

distribution

Distribution areas of the Van Sung shrew

The Van Sung shrew was first described in 2003 from northern Vietnam and so far is only known from this area. The animals were documented at heights of 1500 to 2000 meters in the area of the Tay Con Linh II mountain in the Vietnamese province of Hà Giang near the Chinese border. The species Chodsigoa parca also occurs in this area . A potentially greater distribution in northern Vietnam and possibly also in neighboring China is assumed.

Way of life

No data are available on the way of life of this species. Like all shrews, the Van Sung shrew probably feeds on invertebrates and lives on the ground. The animals were found in bamboo forests at altitudes of 1500 to 2000 meters.

Systematics

The Van Sung shrew is classified as a separate species within the genus Chodsigoa , which consists of eight species. The first scientific description comes from Darrin P. Lunde , Guy G. Musser and Nguyen Truong Son from 2003, who described the species as part of a survey of small mammals at Tay Con Linh II in northern Vietnam using 12 individuals and compared to similar species Delimited Chodsigoa parva and Chodsigoa parca .

The Van Sung shrew was named after the mammalogen Cao Van Sung , who works as a specialist in small mammals at Hanoi University . Apart from the nominate form Chodsigoa caovansunga caovansunga, no further subspecies are distinguished within the species .

Threat and protection

The Van Sung shrew is currently listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) as “data deficient” and not classified in a hazard category due to the lack of data on population size and ecological requirements. Concrete population numbers and threats to the species are not known; a potential hazard could arise from the clearing of forests for logging and conversion into agricultural land.
