Choi In-seok or Choi In-suk (born September 17, 1953 in Namwon , North Chŏlla Province ) is a South Korean writer and playwright .

Life

Choi In-seok began his career as a novelist after having worked successfully as a theater and screenwriter for a long time. From 1985, under the dictatorship of Chun Doo-hwan , he was unable to stage any of his plays, after which he began to write prose. In 1986 he made his debut as a novelist with the novel The Spectators . He has received numerous prizes, including the "Taesan Literature Prize".

Choi's works, in which melancholy or grotesque protagonists often appear, reveal social injustices. Due to his experience in drama, Choi knows how to make use of closed spaces, hallucinations and rigid characterization. His works are therefore also referred to as examples of 'magical realism' and 'the fair of the rejected'. His characters dream of utopia while enduring their inner agony in isolation.
