Choi Jeongrye (* 1955 in Hwasŏng , Kyŏnggi-do ) is a South Korean poet .

Life

Choi enjoyed spending time in the library as a teenager and dreamed of becoming a writer. She studied Korean literature at Korea University , but did not make her debut until much later, in 1990. The reason she gave in an interview was that while studying literature she made a terrifying impression and felt like a powerful ideology for she thought she had to throw away her life. In addition, she lived in the belief that poetry could not be written by ordinary people like you, but that a special, strong character was required. After graduating from college, Choi Jeongrye worked as a teacher of Korean literature and eventually got married and gave birth to children. Then she realized, however, that escaping from literary work did not make her happy.

In 2006 she took part in the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa and was a visiting scholar at the University of California for one year in 2009 . Choi Jeongrye holds a PhD in Korean Modern Poetry and teaches at the Korea National University of Arts in Seoul.

In her poems, the poet deals with the deeper consideration of time and memories. Embedded in this context is a process of self-discovery that serves to understand others and the world as a whole. In dealing with scattered memories and the chaos of time, she realizes that the core of existence is the feeling of emptiness and loneliness. Choi Jeongrye's language is chosen simply, but expressive, but not overflowing with meaningless emotions or analyzing. Simple, everyday words suddenly seem strange and allow new perspectives that reveal the pain of life. Despite this rather gloomy subject matter, the language remains dynamic and lively.
