Choi Soon-sil (born June 23, 1956 in Ahyeon-dong , Mapo-gu , Seoul ) is a South Korean entrepreneur , shaman and accused of criminals in the political scandal surrounding former President Park Geun-hye . She is considered the central protagonist in the scandal that led to Park's resignation.

biography

Choi was born on June 23, 1956 as the fifth daughter of the cult leader Choi Tae-min and his wife Im Sun-yi (임선 이) in Seoul. She began studying economics at Dankook University in 1975 and was subsequently admitted as a chartered accountant. In 1982 Choi married a man named Kim Young-ho (김영호) and had a son with him a year later. The couple divorced in 1986. In 1995 she married the former secretary of her father Chung Yoon-hoi and had a daughter with him, who is called Chung Yoo-ra and who has made a career as a dressage rider . This marriage was also divorced in 2014. Chung Yoon-hoi served as President Park's chief of staff .

Choi's father and Park Geun-hye's father, former President Park Chung-hee , are said to have been closely related. After Park Geun-hye's mother Yuk Young-soo was shot and killed by the North Korean sympathizer Mun Se-gwang , the two men's daughters are said to have become friends.

Choi is said to have extensive competencies in the everyday work of parks. She is said to have written speeches for the politician, selected her clothes and allocated the budget of the Ministry of Culture. In addition, she is said to have bribed the renowned Ewha Womans University in order to get a place for her daughter.

Choi was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment and a fine of 13.5 years in February 2018 on charges of bribery, coercion and abuse of power, which resulted in Choi's organizations receiving large sums of money from large Jaebeols such as Samsung and Hyundai Fined millions of euros.

Choi's role and her influence on the president have been compared to the position of Grigory Efimovich Rasputin at the court of the Russian tsar Nicholas II .
