Chokladbollar with coconut sprinkles

The chokladboll (plural: chokladbollar ; German : “chocolate ball ”), which in Swedish is also known as havreboll (“oat ball”) or negerboll (“negerball”), is a small, spherical baked product from Sweden . Contaminated with coconut sprinkles , it is also known as kokosboll (" coconut ball"), but this term is also used for skumbollar ("foam balls"). The term negerboll has been used less and less in written form (for example in recipe books or on menus) since the beginning of the 21st century, which can be understood as a result of the discussion about the racist connotation of the term, comparable to the discussion about the German terms Negerkuss and chocolate kiss .

preparation

Chokladbollar are made from sugar, edible fat, oat flakes, cocoa, vanilla sugar and occasionally from a few drops of strong coffee or rum . The ingredients are mixed well and the dough is then shaped into small balls. The balls are then often rolled in granulated sugar or coconut and then stored in a cool place or consumed directly. Since many Swedes have these ingredients in stock at home, the chokladbollar are one of the most popular homemade pastries in Sweden. The energy balls known from the alternative movement and the Indian laddus are very similar preparations .

Name and discussion

A pastry shop in Sjöbo , which offered the biscuits as negerboll , was reported in 2003 to the " Ombudsman against ethnic discrimination" by a private person. The subsequent investigation was terminated because the plaintiff was not personally offended. However, as a precautionary measure, it was ordered that companies could no longer use the term negerboll on pain of a fine of 100,000 Swedish kronor because it was out of date and could easily be linked to slavery, oppression and lack of respect for other people.

The term chokladboll first appeared in the dictionary of the Svenska Academies in the 2006 edition together with negerboll . In the previous editions only the term negerboll was used.
